Sherwin-Williams Color Forecast: What Still Works in 2026

Updated June 14, 2026

How to Use Color Forecasts in a Custom Home

Color forecasts are useful when they start a better conversation, not when they become a rulebook. For 2026 custom homes, the smarter move is to use trend palettes as inspiration while grounding selections in light, materials, architecture, and the way each room will be used.

Sherwin-Williams releases annual color forecasting through its Colormix program, and those palettes can be a good way to notice where design is moving. I would still filter every color choice through the actual home: natural light, ceiling height, flooring, cabinetry, stone, exterior materials, and the mood you want in each space.

What Still Works

  • Warm neutrals: They work well with wood, stone, and Idaho light without feeling sterile.
  • Earth-based colors: Greens, clay tones, muted blues, and mineral colors tend to connect naturally with mountain modern and Treasure Valley homes.
  • Contrast used carefully: Dark accents can sharpen a room or exterior, but they need balance so the home does not feel heavy.
  • Whole-home coordination: Paint should work with flooring, cabinets, tile, metal finishes, and exterior materials instead of being picked in isolation.

The goal is not to chase the newest color. The goal is to create a home that feels current now and still makes sense ten years from now.
